A Century of Expertise in the Now
Disruption. Technology. The next big thing.
These are the buzz words that grace the financial papers of today.
As one of Australia’s oldest privately owned financial advisory firms, we’ve seen words like these appear and disappear countless times. History has taught us that change is the only constant. And 100 years of experience has taught us how to navigate that change within the proper context of what has come before. So, no matter the era or climate outside, our clients prosper. Generation to generation, and beyond.
The firm first commenced business in 1889, some five years after the formation of the Stock Exchange of Melbourne. The partnership of E.L. & C. Baillieu traded for almost 100 years until 1986 when the partnership was succeeded by E.L. & C. Baillieu Limited.
The firm has no ongoing association or connection with the Baillieu family.
F.W. Holst & Co Pty Ltd was established in 1893 when Frederick William Holst established a stockbroking business in Ballarat.
F.W. Holst & Co Pty Ltd joined the Stock Exchange of Melbourne. Three of the sons of F.W. Holst became members, Arnold, William Bruce and Edward.
The partnership of E.L. & C. Baillieu ceased trading and was succeeded by E.L. & C. Baillieu Limited. This company was 60% owned by the former partners of the firm and 40% owned by N M Rothschild & Sons (Australia) Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of N M Rothschild & Sons Limited of London.
Rothschild sold its shares back to the directors of E.L. & C. Baillieu Limited. In January 1998, the firm changed its name to E.L. & C. Baillieu Stockbroking Ltd as part of a restructure which saw the Corporate Finance and Institutional Broking divisions of the business sold to Deutsche Bank. No member of the Baillieu family has been a shareholder, Director or member of the management team since then.
The firm formed a strategic alliance with Credit Suisse. As a result, the firm has been able to enhance its service offering to clients through broader research coverage and greater access to corporate fundraising.
In 2012, E.L. & C. Baillieu Stockbroking Ltd merged with F.W. Holst & Co Pty Ltd to create Baillieu Holst Ltd.
Baillieu Holst Ltd formally changed its name to Baillieu Limited.
The Company changed its name to E.L. & C. Baillieu Limited in June 2019, to reflect the long history of the business.
